Ex-situ… Another Option

There are a lot of words, phrases, and sentences that cause controversy, but in the orchids field there are no prefixes that cause so much international polemic in the politics and society as ex-situ.

In-, ex-; in the place or out of it, which would be the best way to conserve orquids?

The answer depends on the usage that you give to the prefix. We could apply and protect the in-situ but if we don’t protect our forests, which are used as shelter, it won’t be functional. Then, if it doesn’t work we support the Ex-situ, which in some places is protected by international norms that are properly applied. It is used to protect and reproduce much more orquids, nevertheless there are some others that ignore these norms and block the reproduction and survival opportunities that technology is giving us these days.

Based on the previous I ask again, which would be the best way to conserve orchids? I would say, a balance, an intermediate option. YES, let’s protect the orchids in their habitat that is the best choice, but if the habitat is endangered or exterminated lets save our planet and grow them anywhere.

So I encourage you to grow an orchid in a forest, in your garden, in your office, or in your grandma’s house. It doesn’t matter where, what matters is that you do it.

Much can be said but what we do is what really matters. Remember what we do in life echoes in eternity.
